Wolves stars Jimenez and Gibbs-White on target – international round-up

Raul Jimenez transferred his ‘goalden’ Wolves form to the international stage as he was on target for Mexico.

The 27-year-old striker put Mexico ahead from the spot in the 52nd minute as they beat Chile 3-1 in a friendly in front of more than 41,000 at the Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, California to give new manager Tata Martino a winning start.

Hector Moreno headed home a corner in the 64th minute and Hirving Lozano chipped a shot over the Chilean goalkeeper’s head less than a minute later to put the contest out of Chile’s reach, before Nicolas Castillo’s 69th minute consolation.

Martino, the former Barcelona coach said: “I’m hopeful, for what I see on the field.

“As coaches, we have two or three training sessions before playing a match.

“When you see the training sessions and put that into what you’re doing that weekend, or FIFA date, it makes me hopeful.”

Elsewhere, Matt Doherty played 52 minutes as a right winger in Ireland’s 1-0 win away to Gilbraltar in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick scored the only goal in the 49th minute.

Romain Saiss was given a night off as a young, inexperienced Morocco drew 0-0 away to Malawi to finish top of Group B in their final African Cup of Nations qualifier. Morocco had already qualified and Malawi had been eliminated.

Morgan Gibbs-White scored for England Under-19s but it wasn’t enough as Keith Downing side slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Greece at Georges Park, leaving qualification for this summer’s Under-19 Euro Finals out of their hands.

A goal in each half from Georgios Llavas and Apostolos Diamantis put the Greeks in the driving seat with Gibbs-White’s 90th minute penalty the only thing to take from a late Young Lions fightback.

But Downing’s side could have easily snatched a point had Danny Loader’s 76th minute spot-kick not been saved.

Gibbs-White was a driving force early on but Greece took the lead in the 34th minute.

Dimitrios Emmanouilidis’s blocked effort fell to Llavas who netted the rebound.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 69th minute as Folvos Mpotos’ corner was drilled home by Diamantis.

Loader won another penalty in the 90th minute but this time Gibbs-White sent Nikopolidis the wrong way..

England must beat Denmark on Tuesday and hope the Czech Republic avoid defeat to Greece to secure their place at the finals in Armenia.

Leander Dendoncker played his second successive full game for Belgium as they beat Cyprus 2-0 tonight and Eden Hazard scored on his 100th cap for his country.

Dendoncker again formed an all-Midlands central midfield partnership with Leicester’s Youri Tielemans in Roberto Martinez’s 3-4-2-1 formation as Belgium went top of Euro 2020 qualifying Group I.

Hazard fired Belgium into the lead within 10 minutes with a curling effort from inside the box.

Crystal Palace striker Michy Batshuayi then rounded the keeper after he was played in by Thorgan Hazard to make it 2-0.
